UPS Oversized and Additional Handling Info

Items marked OS1 or OS2 require special ordering considerations.

Oversized Packages and Additional Handling Charges

The Problem:

Some of our products (those marked OS1 or OS2) are shipped in large (oversized) boxes.
UPS has minimum weights for large packages and long packages (see info below).
UPS charges the greater of the actual weight and the minimum weight.
These minimum weights differ depending on whether the package is being shipped ground or air. For example, the carton we use to ship 2" diameter brass tubes, (which can hold six 8' tubes), is "OverSize 2" (the carton is 97" x 5" x 7") and has a minimum weight of 70 lbs if shipped by ground (OS2) UPS Oversize Package Info, but only 18 lbs if shipped by air. When you order oversize items, we place "dummy" shipping packages in your shopping cart. These packages will be marked **Ground** or **Air** depending on the chosen shipping method. They will have the correct weight or minimum weight depending on the shipping method, what items are packed and the number of items.

The Solution:

Look for the box with two radio buttons "Ground" and "Air"

Calculate shipping for

Ground
Air
(Next Day, 2nd Day, 3rd Day)
Check Ground or Air radio button before ordering. (They are called "radio" buttons because they act like buttons on a radio; only one button can be checked at a time).

On the choose zip code (this shopping cart page appears when you first order an item) choose the "drop down" with the same shipment type as the "radio" button. Note that the Air button should be used for UPS Next Day, 2nd Day or 3rd Day.
IMPORTANT: If you change your shipping method from "ground" to "air" or vice-versa

Clear your shopping cart of all items
Go "Back" to the order page
Choose desired shipment type [ Ground -or- Air ]
Re-order the desired items
On the Shopping cart page, select the appropriate "drop down" to match the shipping method you chose using the radio buttons.
This is necessary only if you are changing between ground and air. If you are changing between different air shipment methods, for example Next Day <--> 2nd Day <--> 3rd Day, all of which are "air," you do not have to do this.
The reason it is necessary to empty your cart is that you will have dummy shipping packages with the wrong billable weights for the shipment method.

Additional Handling

UPS charges a $5 "Additional handling charge" for each package over 60" in length. This is in addition to the minimum weights for Oversize1 [ 30 lbs ] and Oversize2 [ 70 lbs ] packages). Our shopping cart adds this charge as a line item cost- NOT as a shipping charge (even though it really is). UPS Additional Handling Info

Example: Ordering 12 pcs 8' tubing and 3 pcs 6' tubing:

We can pack 6 pieces of 2" diameter tube into our standard carton. Each 8' tube weighs about 9.6 lbs. A carton is fully packed with 6 tubes would weigh 57.6 lbs. Shipped via ground, UPS would bill 70 lbs (minimum weight) while shipped via air (Next Day, 2nd day, 3rd day) UPS would bill 57.6 lbs (the 57.6 lbs actual weight is greater than the 18 lb minimum weight ).

The following image of a shopping cart shows how the shopping cart is packed for 12 pieces of 8' tubing and 3 pieces of 6' tubing. Note the following:

There are two OS2 packages and one OS1 package. The two OS2 package each contain 6 pieces of the 8' tubes. The OS1 package contains the 3 pieces of 6' tube.
Both the two OS2 packages and the one OS1 package are longer than 60", so each will be charged an additional $5 handling charge. The total $15 handling charge is added to the order subtotal, not the shipping charges.
Both the dummy packages and the shopping cart agree the shipment is "Ground" If the dummy packages were to say ***Air*** and the shipping cost line were to say "Gnd" (or vice versa) they would NOT be in agreement. If they are not in agreement, it is necessary to "Empty your cart" (link in lower left corner of Shopping Cart) and re-order.
